For many of us summer means, the kids are out of school and we might be thinking. “How can I help my child continue reading during summer?” The main advice I give parents is model reading… I know it sounds too simple but what I mean is truly read everything in your surroundings. In case you need ideas, read the labels, recipes, directions, cereal boxes, I know I read those every morning I had a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Also, any signs on the road, the titles of the songs on the screen, etc. The more you read the more your Pre-k through first grade child will want to read too. If you have older children involve them, have them read the GPS directions as you follow their lead. Of course this does not replace the actual reading of books or storytelling, but this is a good way to get a few minutes in of real-life events where reading is important.
